One of the world’s oldest gemstones, Turquoise has been celebrated across cultures for centuries. When Turkish traders introduced this “Persian blue” stone to Europe via the Silk Road in the 13th century, they influenced the gemstone’s name. The word “turquoise” comes from the French pierre tourques for “Turkish stone.”
The tranquil blue-green shades of this stone are reminiscent of the sea and sky. Because of this soothing color, early Persians believed turquoise represented the heavens and used it to cover the domes of palaces and places of worship.
Egyptians called turquoise mefkat, which meant “joy” and “delight.” They set turquoise in gold necklaces and rings, used it as inlay, and carved it into scarabs. Most notably, King Tut’s iconic burial mask was extravagantly adorned with turquoise.
Tribes such as the Aztecs believed the stone was sacred and made intricate masks and other adornment for ceremonies and important rituals.
Navajo legend is that when rain fall finally came after a long drought, a tribe cried tears of pure joy. These tears, mixed with the rain and earth, produced Turquoise.
Revered for its distinct color and beauty, along with its spiritual and healing properties, Turquoise has long been a cherished stone, worldwide.
